MOVIE REVIEW::GOLMAAL RETURNS
Not all sequeals and remakes are successful. Among the sequels, I can remember only Munnabhai, Sarkar Raj and Krrish which brought some box office success to the directors but other failed miserably. Out of the above three, only Munnabhai was a sequeal which had no connection with the first one. And Golmaal Returns is also of the same genre.
It has a different story line altogether, no connection with the previous one. Sharman Joshi is replaced by Shreyas Talpade, though one can see various implications of 'Golmaal' tried to fit in this one. Like Paresh Rawal and Sharman Joshi's photograph, back ground music of the hit 'kyun aage peeche dolte ho ' and that cobra man played by Vrajesh Heerjee.
Tusshar Kapoor plays the dumb again and then there is Vasooli continuing from where he left. Rimi Sen is replaced by Kareena Kapoor, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora and Anjana Sukhani. This means that this time there is no rivalry and competition for a girl. In any case, Ajay Devgan is already married to Kareena and the entire story revolves around Kareena's suspicion over the 'tharki' character of Ajay. Arshad plays a cop who is after his life.
There is nothing much in the story. Since this is an out and out comedy, it has worked. But it fails to stand out as one of the biggest comedy hits. Golmaal Returns is more or less like Golmaal, but I personally felt it short of expectations. The jokes are good but nearly all of them are over stretched. You certainly laugh at them but then they have over done each time that makes them dull and one-dimensional.
There are various spoofs included in the flick - one of Saawariya, Black and Ekta Kapoor's serials - and none of them was nicely done. The sarcasm which intended to continue some parts of the Golmaal were pretty good, like Ajay telling Shreyas 'tu pehli wali me nahi tha na...' and Arshad saying, 'isko pehle me chhokri mili ab naukri.. teesre me kya milega...?' etc.
In the acting department, Tusshar's dumb character is far better than the collective efforts of all the others. He certainly was at his vintage best. I feel he should be given the roles of dumb characters only (pun intented). Ajay, Arshad and Shreyas were pretty OK. Among the girls, Anjana had a very little screen presence, but she was the one who was looking the most gorgeous. Kareena plays the suspicious wife, who loves watching TV soaps, well. Celina and Amrita are in a non-glam role, and were quite up to the mark. Apart from these, there wasn't much scope for the others like Mukesh Rishi, Sharat Saxena, Vrajesh Heerji and Rakhi Tandon, etc.
The music is not as good as Golmaal. The highly expensive song, which is in the news these days, is very out of place and is very loud. It can be easily the worst songs of the movie. Money wasted!
Overall, if you really liked the first Golmaal and are pretty free this weekend, go and watch this. 2 stars out of 5 and .5 extra for the adult comedy. :P
